Remediation: Evolution of the American News Media

For this assignment, we were asked to bring the topic from our repurposing to a new medium. Because my repurposing examines the present American media landscape, I felt that looking into the events of the recent past that have contributed to what we see today would make for an interesting remediation. The timeline below shows major court rulings, policies, and other information pertaining to the polarization, consolidation, and growing public distrust of our media.

Today…

  • There is no legislation ensuring objectivity of licensed broadcasters. Any narrative is fair game, so long as you can ensure a sizable audience for shareholders

  • There is no legislation effectively enforcing a cap on media-ownership

  • 90% of the US media is said to be owned by 6 companies. In 1983, this number sat at 50 companies

  • The influence of corporate lobbies has never been stronger, and recent developments have given them the ability to sway elections and, consequently, policy

  • The American public has become increasingly aware of our broken political system and our often unreliable media. This distrust has never been more clear than over the past year and a half
